Mounted Shooting is one of the fastest growing equestrian sports in North America today. It's the combination of a fast paced timed equestrian sport and shooting.
Competitors ride a variety of courses requiring precision control of the horse. You must use two .45 caliber single action revolvers loaded with special blank ammunition. The rider must be ready to shoot ten balloon targets at a gallop or at least riding as fast as he can safely. Scoring is based on the time running the course plus a five second penalty for each target missed or barrel knocked over. Competitors are grouped in classes based on experience and wins, with classes for Men, Ladies, Seniors, and Outlaws (under 12). The Outlaws are non-shooting competitors who ride the same course as the adults but are limited to cap pistols..
There is appoximately 8000 shooters is North America. There are new clubs started up Internationally in Sweden and Germany and Australia. Recently the Cowboy Mounted Shooters of American (CMSA) has just signed an affiliate deal with the AQHA. Any Registered AQHA horse competing can get points from the AQHA.
Our own Canadian Cowboy Mounted Shooters Association has been up and running for 2 years. We are also affiliated with the CMSA.
